Odisha Assembly Elections 2024
Odisha Assembly Elections 2024: A Battle of Political Giants
BY AMREEN
AHMAD
The recent dissolution of the Odisha Legislative Assembly marked the beginning of a fierce electoral battle in the state. The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is determined to retain power with a strong majority, aiming to win at least 110 out of the 147 Assembly Constituencies. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is confident in its prospects, asserting that change is inevitable and that they will form the government for the first time. In the last Assembly elections in 2019, the BJD secured a landslide victory, winning 112 seats, while the BJP managed to secure 23 seats, and the Congress was left with only nine. However, both the BJD and Congress saw a decrease in their seat numbers compared to the previous election, while the BJP made significant gains. This year's election is crucial for both the BJD and the BJP. The BJD, led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, is facing a tough challenge amid growing anti-incumbency sentiments. On the other hand, the BJP sees this as a golden opportunity to capture power in a state where they have been striving for success for years.
The campaign trail witnessed intense political rhetoric,
with both parties making ambitious promises to the electorate. Development,
employment, healthcare, and infrastructure were among the key issues discussed
during the campaign. After a four-phase election with a turnout of 74.44%, all
eyes are now on the results. The outcome will determine the future course of
governance in Odisha and will have far-reaching implications for its residents.
For Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who has been in power since 2000, this
election holds significance as he seeks to secure a sixth consecutive term. The
BJD's track record of governance and the Chief Minister's popularity will be
put to the test against the BJP's determined bid for change. As the results
begin to pour in, the political landscape of Odisha is set to witness a
significant shift. Whether the BJD will maintain its stronghold or the BJP will
emerge victorious remains to be seen. Nonetheless, one thing is certain – the
people of Odisha have spoken, and their decision will shape the state's future
for years to come.
