How Much Do MPs Earn Monthly? – Post Lok Sabha Election Results 2024

BY AMREEN AHMAD

Winning candidates in the Lok Sabha elections who become Members of Parliament (MPs) receive many benefits from the government for five years. Even after their term ends, they get a pension and several other perks. MPs receive a monthly salary of one lakh rupees. They also get a house in Delhi, three phone lines, and free travel by air, rail, and road at the government's expense. While serving as MPs, they are entitled to various facilities. Additionally, former MPs also enjoy several benefits.  MPs receive a monthly salary of 100,000 rupees. They also get a constituency allowance of 70,000 rupees per month. Office expense allowance is 60,000 rupees per month. This allowance is divided into two categories for office meetings and postage and for secretarial assistance. During parliamentary sessions, MPs get a daily allowance of 2,000 rupees for attending proceedings, provided they sign the attendance register. They receive expenses for durable furniture and non-durable furniture. If they choose to stay in a bungalow instead of the allocated house, they must pay the designated fee themselves. MPs get free utilities such as 50,000 units of electricity per year, 4,000 kl of water per year. They get a monthly fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) internet connection worth 2,200 rupees at their Delhi residence. Their assistants can travel in AC-2 class. They receive a travel allowance of 16 rupees per km for road travel. They are entitled to healthcare facilities equivalent to those of Grade One officers (IAS/IPS) of the Indian government. Even serving as an MP for any period entitles them to a minimum pension of 25,000 rupees per month. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) also reviews and revises the allowance and expenses of MPs regularly.
